The way Wilder goes about escalating the events of this film during the final 20 minutes to highlight his belief in the fallibility of human-driven journalism and the thought of them writing some form of "truth" as being a terrifying power trip has to be some of the most discussion-inducing cinema of all time. This is that across the board admittedly, and I bet the question of when Kirk Douglas's Tatum goes over the line of journalistic integrity is posed across the world in classes on the subject.

You know your movie is in trouble when all the fight scenes after the opening one would be improved by having visible health bars on the screen so we could actually tell what damage is being done and what the stakes of the fight are at any given moment because jesus H. christ is it impossible to do so as it is.

In a way this is by far the best Ip Man. It has small enough a scale that it can actually spend time with the characters to build up the melodrama which actually makes it efficient for the first time ever in this series.
But in a way it is by far the worst. First off, you've got noted domestic abuser/trash person Mike Tyson in one of those "Chinese people love him!" -roles. Admittedly the action scene he's involved with is easily the best action scene you could do with Mike Tyson in 2015, but he's still gross and sticks out like a sore thumb (though I appreciate the period-appropriate mustache). Then you've got the lack of Sammo as an action director. Now, the action scenes here are pretty good, but they lack the clarity of the prior films, and they feel like a step down in terms of how imaginative they are. It just doesn't reach for the stars. Then, and this one really fucking sucks, is how the movie highlights how dirty this entire series handles Ip Man's wife, who is consistently portrayed as someone who views her husband's martial arts as a pesky nuisance (until the climax of course) and she practically has to die for him to have his fights. I hate that the melodrama simultaneously works very well on an emotional level and insults me on an intelligent one with just about everything that happens towards the end of this movie.

Probably legit Paul WS Anderson's best film that has apparently tragically run out of money(?).
I've seen Milla Jovovich in too many Resident Evil -movies and crappy horror movies or thrillers in the past years so I forgot she can act. Her character and how she plays her is the highlight of this thing and lowkey a total powerhouse performance.

This movie is challenging in a good way. I'm not entirely sure it is challenging in a fulfilling way. That isn't much of an issue though, because the trip it takes you on is pretty unique and crafted with a hyper-specificity that only comes from experience. Chooses exactly the right moments to emphasize.
