A 1983 William Hurt could carry just about any movie being a handsome devil, but this thriller lasts for 128 minutes which is too much for one man to bear. It's not bad, but it is 128 minutes of not bad, which leans it from OK to not-exactly-OK. Coupled with some problematic tropes, a lot of similar scenes (who thought it'd be great to have like four tailing-people-in-a-crowd scenes in one movie?) and aside from the gruesome nature of the crimes being solved, a somewhat milquetoast mystery, it's not the best. But it does have Hurt and a fun, sadistic Lee Marvin performance along with a bonkers score that goes from zero to a thousand usually for no reason, and the action scenes, when they do occur, are somewhat explosive, with one jump in particular being an obvious inspiration for the Bourne-films a good twenty years later, so it's not all bad. If it were shorter it would be good.

I had heard a great deal about Doctor Vampire before watching it. This led me to being somewhat... underwhelmed, by it. Though HK comedy is often incredibly offensive and juvenile, this mostly focuses on the latter, with plenty of dick jokes abound from our lead being bit in it to turn him into a vampire (leading to scenes of his friends examining his package while women look on in horror thinking it's a blowjob) to a fully erect vampire trying to fuck anything that moves getting literally cockblocked by a steel sheet. Still, it has an inspired escalation of events as midway through our hero and his friends start stealing blood from patients under the guise of blood tests using a syringe the size of Hulk Hogan's 12-inch Pythons. Before this they were only performing surgeries to fix things they certainly wouldn't fix! ("You circumcised me for an ulcer!")
It's all well and good and then The Count shows up. So The Count is played by Godfrey Ho -regular Peter Kjær and the best way to describe him would be to imagine Dracula from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night's opening scenes. Then, turned up tenfold. Then making it so he can never stop moving. He must always be shaking if he isn't lunging at his enemies. He also has lines clearly just drawn with eyeliner all over his face to make him look menacing in his frizzy, very Interview With a Vampire before that was a thing -haircut and clothing. He also wields nothing short of a 10/10 shit-eating grin for his entire screen time in the climax that seems to last for around 20-30 minutes, during which the film transforms from comedy to full on action-horror-comedy hybrid, as vampire women get stabbed through boobs, angry statues provide magical aid, laser duels are fought, and bells play a big part in all of it. The last 30 minutes of Doctor Vampire are the Mad Max: Fury Road of HK action comedies, never stopping once and being an absolutely glorious, batshit, Heroic-Trio's-hell-scenes-extended-to-30-minutes trip that redeems a great deal of the issues I had during the first hour of it. Holy shit.

Quite good, if mostly due to being a fresh perspective. Why is this a show, though?

A refreshing Finnish comedy that is both insightful and actually very funny.
