Chow Yun-Fat applies the rarely seen flying shotgun technique to murder people from behind a corner. This is certainly his tour-de-force in terms of proving that he can be a true manly man, an asshole, a slippery coward, a charismatic action star and a romantic lead all in a single film. The stunts are, as per the prime of 80s HK-actioners, absolutely golden, and the humor is occasionally very funny, such as when Yun-Fat eats his breakfast of champions that Sylvester Stallone taught him (it's a lot of garbage basically including so many raw eggs you'll lose count).

The Hallow is, if nothing else, rather pretty. The practical monsters are well designed and the shot composition is more often than not rather sharp and smart. The problems arise from the editing being kind of shit and the night scenes being very, very dark. The story has an interesting premise but doesn't go much of anywhere, even though the climax is actually rather emotional and fulfilling for such a silly story. The creatures are what you come here for, and they're all very good.

There is nothing inherently wrong with what Victor Frankenstein attempts to do. Humanizing the possibly least human and most stereotypical character of the original work, Igor, into a mistreated scientist, is a really interesting idea, and I'd argue most of the things they do with him in this movie reach that potential. The real problems arise during the second half of the movie when Frankenstein and Igor start cutting up some fools, because it becomes this Van Helsing -esque CGI-mess of plotting behind backs and dull action scenes, complete with obvious studio cuts removing most of the nuance from, for example, Andrew Scott's villain performance. It's a garbled mess that doesn't hold up the promise of theological horror of the first half.
